Coworking Space Etiquette

Shared space means shared responsibility.

When working in a coworking space, it’s essential to understand the do’s and don’ts to ensure everyone has a good experience and fair use of the space. Here are the basics of coworking space etiquette.

Be Mindful of Noise

One thing is for sure, there will be noise when you get a bunch of people in a room. Open spaces like the concourse tend to have friendly chatter, clicking of keys, and shuffling of papers as background noise to your workday. Thankfully, coworking spaces like USTATION tend to have a variety of working environments to suit your needs like meeting rooms for gatherings or private phone calls.

But just because a space is open, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be considerate about the noise level. Devices should be silent and conversations should be held at a reasonable tone to not be excessively distracting to others using the space.

Tip: get yourself a good pair of headphones and take the more engaging or private calls in meeting rooms or in the uPods.

Keeping it Clean

Just like at home, you are responsible for your own tidiness. At the sink, you will find dish soap to wash your dishes with and a drying cloth to dry them. Cleaning up isn’t just about your dishes and that mug you enjoyed your coffee from, it’s also about your workspace. Keep it neat and tidy and leave it just as you found it - clean and empty. If you happen to make use of the shared fridge or microwave, ensure that your food is eaten and disposed of.

Respect Boundaries and Other Peoples' Time

People work differently and you will soon (if you haven’t already) come to recognize the signs that someone would rather be left alone or is deep into their work. If someone has headphones on, it’s safe to assume that they don’t want to be interrupted for example.

When in doubt, ask! It’s not only polite but very considerate of someone else's time to simply ask them if they are available for a conversation or question. Their time is as valuable as yours and it’s important to respect how they chose to use it.

Use a Reasonable Amount of Space

While some projects may involve paperwork and writing utensils that take more space than a laptop, it’s important not to take more space than you need. USTATION has ample seating and members are spread out regarding the time of day of their visit, but you never really know when people will come and go and need space. And while you may have a special corner you prefer to work in, it’s helpful to have a backup space in mind for the shared common area should someone else also enjoy that cozy spot with the perfect view of the harbour.
